Self Assessment FAQ
Straight answers to the most common questions. Tax rules depend on your circumstances, so use these as general guidance and check anything uncertain with HMRC or an accountant.
Still unsure? Talk to usWhat is Self Assessment?+
Self Assessment is HMRC's system for collecting Income Tax on income that is not fully taxed at source. A return brings together your taxable income, gains, allowances and tax already paid for one tax year.
Does a limited company director need to file a tax return?+
Being a director does not automatically mean you must file. You may need to file if HMRC asks you to, or if you have untaxed income or gains to report—for example dividends, property income, foreign income or capital gains. Check your circumstances with HMRC or an accountant.
What are the deadlines for the 2025/26 tax year?+
If you need to tell HMRC for the first time, the usual registration deadline is 5 October 2026. Paper returns are normally due by 31 October 2026. Online returns and any balancing tax are normally due by 31 January 2027. Different dates can apply in some circumstances.
What information will I need?+
Common records include your P60 or P45, P11D, dividend vouchers, savings interest, property income and costs, pension contributions, Gift Aid, foreign income, capital gains and details of any tax already paid. AIS shows a focused checklist based on your answers.
Will AIS use figures already in my company account?+
Yes. For a director using AIS, the Self Assessment dashboard can pre-fill salary and dividend figures recorded in Pay Yourself. You still review and confirm them and provide any personal income held outside the company.
Can I see what I might owe before filing?+
Yes. AIS presents an indicative calculation while you prepare the return. It is a planning estimate until all income, gains, allowances, reliefs and tax already paid have been confirmed and the final calculation has been reviewed.
What are payments on account?+
Payments on account are advance payments towards your next Self Assessment bill. They are usually paid in two instalments, on 31 January and 31 July. AIS provides a separate payment timeline for planning these alongside any balancing payment.
Is Self Assessment included in an AIS plan?+
Director Self Assessment is included in the AIS Pro plan shown on our pricing page. Requirements outside the standard service may need separate scoping, so check the plan details or speak with us before starting.
